It's a multilateration method in which the User Equipment (UE) measures the time difference between some specific signals from several eNodeBs and reports these time differences to a specific device in the network (the ESMLC ). 2014-06-06 · Observed Time Difference Of Arrival (OTDOA) Positioning in 3GPP LTE Contents 5 Figure 8-14: Illustration of the Effect of a Repeater Installation in a Network Using OTDOA. .. 61 Figure 8-15: Network with low power RRHs within the macrocell coverage.. 62 of arrival (OTDOA) based positioning for Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), which will be integrated as a part of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long ermT Evolution TE) release 14.

The used positioning technique is known as observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA), because the device measures the arrival time of several transmitted reference signals. By using the difference between the observed arrival times, the position of the device can be estimated. OTDOA is a feature to determine the location of a User Equipment based on radio access network information. Downlink OTDOA assistance provides the UE the cell PRS position for intra or inter-frequency RSTD measurements. Positioning reference signals are transmitted on antenna port 6.

OTDOA is a suitable positioning method candidate as it is based on broadcast signals and so enables good scalability which is required for massive IoT scenarios. Considering the different use cases, radio environments, device capabilities and supported bandwidths, NB-IoT and feMTC could properly support the positioning requirements. The OTDOA positioning method makes use of the measured timing of downlink signals received from multiple TPs, comprising eNBs, ng-eNBs and PRS-only TPs, at the UE. The UE measures the timing of the received signals using assistance data received from the positioning server, and the resulting measurements are used to locate the UE in relation to the neighbouring TPs. I wrote about the 5G Americas white paper titled, "The 5G Evolution: 3GPP Releases 16-17" highlighting new features in 5G that will define the next phase of 5G network deployments across the globe.
